The last month has seen a shift in travel behaviours as more Australians return to work, their regular commute, and even start to take (local!) holidays. This change in attitude is reflected in the most recent patronage and mobility data available which shows NSW, ACT and QLD Transport networks continuing to move closer to their pre-CV19 baseline.
PATRONAGE UPDATE
June data released by Transport of NSW, shows that TorchMedia’s Sydney portfolio of Trains, Light Rail, Ferries and Northwest Metro have increased a further 51% month on month from May. Audience patronage rebounded fastest across Sydney Ferries and Sydney Metro Northwest networks in June, with a monthly increase of 85% for Ferry commuters while Metro commuters grew 77% from May 2020 patronage. This recovery demonstrates that it is the daily commuter audience that is returning to these modes.
Transit audiences in the ACT are experiencing similar signs of increasing commuter demand for the Canberra Light Rail, with the latest Myway Ticketing data indicating a 66% month on month increase from May to June.
MOBILITY UPDATE
The most recent Google Community Mobility Report suggests there is now just a 35% difference in pre-CV19 movements for key Transport hubs across ACT, NSW & QLD.
Mobility data capturing audience movements at key Public Transport precincts has grown steadily week on week for the month of June in all states except for Melbourne due to the latest outbreak and subsequent lockdown.
The latest figures by state are as follows (depicting difference from pre-CV19 baseline):
- ACT 36%
- NSW 36%
- QLD 34%
- VIC 66%
- SA 25%
- WA 31%
NSW TRANSIT CAPACITY LIMIT DOUBLES
As commuter demand increases for Sydney’s public transport networks, Transport for NSW have doubled capacity limits from July 1. With increased cleaning occurring multiple times per day, and marshals across the network to assist with social distancing, we can assume Sydneysiders will continue to return to their commute with confidence.
At TorchMedia we will continue to focus on the recovery of valuable transit audiences while championing the safety-first approach of our transport partners for their staff and passengers.
